Butterfly Bush Violet Sweetly scented.
A snap to grow from seed, Buddleia's only problem is knowing when to stop! Left unpruned, it will reach 14 feet tall, but since it flowers on new wood, you'll want to cut it back to about 10 inches each spring before the new growth begins. If started early, it will even bloom the first year from seed. What a performer! Packet is 100 seeds. Buy this plant, from Park Seeds. |

Pampas Grass Pink Note: Beautiful as it is, it's been brought to my attention that Pampas Grasses are extremely invasive; we're talking as bad as purple loose-strife! Like Purple Loosestrife, this is a poor plant for sustaining wildlife, and it strangles out native plants that do support wildlife. In effect it leaves local wildlife without adequate food or shelter in the area it takes over. Much thanks to Mimi in California for writing in to let me know about this plant. It seems wise for seed sellers to discontinue selling this plant, or at the very least, to mention it's invasiveness in catalogs! ~Amy |
| Toadflax Canon J.Went Blooms the first year from seed! Pastel Pink Spikes Bloom All Spring and Summer! Wispy 3-foot plumes with gray-green foliage. Every garden deserves a plant like this perennial Linaria--easy to grow, maintenance-free, long-blooming, lovely, and ready to self-sow for even more color next year! The soft pink blooms resemble snapdragons, but bloom all up and down very sturdy, airy 3-foot spikes from spring right through summer. And it blooms the first year from seed! The foliage on these sun-loving plants is gray-green, nicely offsetting the soft blooms. Although it freely self-sows, it is never invasive. Tolerates even poor, dry soils. An under-appreciated treasure for the perennial border, Linaria will provide you with many years of color!Pkt is 100 seeds. Buy this plant, from Park Seeds. |
| Astilbe chinensis Pumila An ultra-colorful ground cover --for the shade! Extend the Astilbe Season with Petite, Colorful Pumila ! Just 8 to 15 inches high and wide--a wonderful ground cover! Blooms mid to late summer. The most versatile Astilbe we know. This petite, rosy-pink variety grows just 8 to 15 inches high and wide in the shade and doesn't start blooming until most others have stopped!
Pumila is a neat, very easy-to-grow plant, more tolerant of dry soils than other Astilbes and just packed with rosy-pink color! Perfect as a ground cover, a container plant or a shinning gem for the front of the shade garden. Pumila is a trouble-free joy. Blooms begin in midsummer and continue until fall. Best in shade. Packet is 100 seeds. Buy this plant, from Park Seeds. |

Salvia leucantha "As I was looking over your pictures I thought of a plant that I grow in my own gardens which might also be a good alternative for some. Mexican Sage (Salvia leucantha). They can reach 6' here, very slowly spread by underground runners, are perennial, and come in an assorted of colors and bicolors. The flowers are like chenile and hummingbirds here love them." Jenra Note: This is not a perennial in most areas (only hardy to 25 degrees). ~Amy |
