This sweater is worked using the following two pattern stitches:

Simple Seed Stitch (a stockinet stitch interspersed with purl stitches):
Row 1: *K3, P1* (repeat the stitches between the *’s, over and over, until end of row. Don’t worry if you don’t have enough stitches at the end to complete the last set of stitches.)
Row 2, 4, 6 and 8: purl
Rows 3 and 7: knit
Row 5: K1, *P1, K3*

Butterfly Stitch:
Instructions given for multiple of 10 stitches plus 5 (ie. 15, 25, 35 stitches). You will have to add or decrease some knit (or purl) stitches from the beginning and end of the knit (or purl) rows, in order for the butterflies to be centered where you want them to be in the garment. I’ve given instructions, when appropriate, on how many stitches to adjust.
Rows 1 and 3: K5, *K 2 tog, yo, K1, yo, sl 1, K1, psso (pass slipped stitch over), K5*
Rows 2 and 4: *P7, sl 1 P-wise, P2* P5
Rows 5 and 11: knit
Rows 6 and 12: purl
Rows 7 and 9: *K 2 tog, yo, K1, yo, sl 1, K1, psso, K5*, K 2 tog, yo, K1, yo, sl 1, K1, psso
Rows 8 and 10: *P2, sl 1 P-wise, P7*, P2, sl 1 P-wise, P2
